Robert Isham of Barby
1588–1656
Life
Robert Isham of Barby, Northamptonshire, esquire, eldest son and heir of Gregory Isham of the same place, esquire, by Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Catelyne, was born about 1588.1,2 In his youth he was of the Middle Temple, London, and is frequently styled gentleman in contemporary legal rolls, occasionally being described as late of the Middle Temple or of London, alias of Barby.3,4,5 By a deed dated 10 November 1606, certain mortgaged lands in the parish of Barby were settled upon him and his brother Henry by their father, with whom he joined as co-plaintiff in Chancery against Burton.2 Involved in the intricate and burdensome financial difficulties of his house, he was continually impleaded in the Court of Common Pleas and the King's Bench from 1610 onward for debts in London and Northamptonshire, appearing alongside his father6, his brother Henry7, his uncle Zaccheus Isham of Hillmorton8, and Richard Isham of Barby9, and was for a time in the custody of the Marshal of the Marshalsea.10 Later succeeding to his father's position, he was commonly styled esquire, defending actions brought by local creditors11,12 and appearing as a tenant in Barby in an Exchequer process of 1644.13 In 1650 and 1651 he was engaged in further Chancery litigation concerning lands in Onley, Northamptonshire, and property in Halstead, Essex.14,15 He appears to have died unmarried, or at least without surviving issue, and was buried at St Mary's, Barby, on 10 April 1656.16
