Generation XIII

Captain Henry Isham

1626–1676

Life

Henry Isham, son of William Isham and Mary Brett, came to Virginia about 1656 and settled at Bermuda Hundred on the James River.1,2,3 He married Katherine Banks, widow of Joseph Royall of Henrico County, about 1659, and became guardian of her under-age children and manager of the Royall plantation called Doggams.1,2,3 They had three children: Henry, Mary and Anne.3

By 1657 he was a justice of Charles City County, and in 1669 and 1670 he was captain and high sheriff of Henrico County.? He died in 1676.1 Katherine survived him; her will of 1686 asked to be buried at home beside her late husband.4

A story that he was hanged for taking part in Bacon's Rebellion has no basis: he is not among those executed, and his family kept their property. Care is also needed not to confuse him with his son Henry Isham, who died unmarried in 1678.3,4
