Generation XII
Richard Isham
1595–1658
Life
Richard Isham, a younger son of Gregory Isham of Barby, Northamptonshire, esquire, and Elizabeth, daughter of Robert Catelyne of Raunds, gentleman, was christened at Piddington on 10 February 1594/5.1 The 1599 will of his grandfather Robert Catelyne left him five marks.? By a deed poll of 18 December 1614 he assigned lands in Barby to his brother-in-law Giles Parslowe of London and another.? Between about 1613 and 1620 he was joined in the Court of King's Bench with his elder brother Robert Isham of Barby on scire facias process to show cause why execution should not issue on a debt judgment, described on the plea rolls as Richard Isham of the same vill.2,3
He is identified with the Richard Isham of Gilmorton, Leicestershire, a few miles across the county border from Barby, where his uncle Zaccheus Isham of Hillmorton and other kinsmen lived nearby.? That Richard married Mary, who was buried at Gilmorton on 26 May 1657, and was buried there himself on 14 May 1658.4 The identification, like his fatherhood of Robert Isham of Gilmorton and John Isam of Walton, rests on name, place and date rather than on any record naming his parents.?
